healthy dental alternatives Eliminating Mercury Amalgam Fillings and Their Associated Problems There is a new and better way to handle "routine" cavities, by using a treatment called the Cavilase procedure. healthy dental alternatives Instead of using a drill that sets up heat and fracture patterns in the tooth and destroys delicate and vital tooth structure, a laser is used to remove the decayed area. A dental hard-tissue laser can pinpoint the decay and remove it without damaging any adjacent tooth structure, preserving more of the vital tooth tissue. An added bonus of using lasers is that they can disinfect the treated area far more thoroughly and completely than any chemical process can. healthy dental alternatives The filling material that is placed into the treated area is made up of calcium and other "toothlike," or biocompatible compounds which, when they are fused/bonded to the tooth using another laser, can restore the tooth to its original strength and appearance. Since the filling is bonded to the tooth, and actually becomes a structural part of the tooth, it may never fail and that treated tooth may never need any further treatment for the life of the patient. healthy dental alternatives Another benefit of the Cavilase procedure is that in many, if not most cases, as long as the cavity is not close to the nerve, Novacaine is not even necessary. This treatment, which is much more benign and patient-friendly, may also serve to lessen the patient's stress and fear levels.

healthy dental alternatives Treating the Infected Tooth Nerve Instead of Removing It--Eliminating the Traditional "Root Canal" Just because a tooth nerve is infected and causing a patient pain, doesn't mean that the nerve needs to be drilled out and a root canal procedure needs to be done. healthy dental alternatives As long as there is still viable nerve or pulp tissue in the nerve chamber, the infection can be removed with a laser, and the tissue can be encouraged to re-grow, and replace the removed dead and infected tissue using biocompatible, healing compounds. This procedure, known as the Laser Nerve Treatment, keeps the tooth alive and its blood and lymphatic circulation intact, which is important for the tissue surrounding the tooth and for providing continued immunity. healthy dental alternatives In this procedure, the tooth root is accessed using a high-speed, electronic drill that minimizes shock and trauma to the tooth. The infected, necrotic tissue is removed using a laser, the entire area is disinfected with a laser, then a nutrient-rich, biocompatible material is placed into the nerve/root chamber that will encourage the remaining, healthy nerve/pulp tissue to re-grow and replace the missing tissue. The tooth is then sealed with a biocompatible filling material in a manner very similar to the the Cavilase procedure mentioned above. healthy dental alternatives This treatment may restore the tooth to full health, vitality and strength, eliminate the need for a crown, and is a much heathier and immunity-preserving therapy than the standard root canal. But what if the tooth nerve is completely dead and fully infected, and needs to be removed from the root/nerve chamber? Even then, there is a better, healthier alternative to the standard root canal. First, after all of the dead infected tissue is removed, the nerve/root chamber is cleaned out and treated with ozonated water and other biocompatibles, and disinfected with a laser, providing much greater sterilization that standard chemicals. One reason the laser works better is that the disinfecting laser light is reflected off of all surfaces in the nerve/root chamber, so that no pathogens can hide from it. After the chamber is completely cleaned and disinfected, the root tips are sealed with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, which is a biocompatible material that simulates the way live tooth tissue would act, thus helping to regenerate the circulation, tissues, immune membrane and bone surrounding the tooth.
The remainder of the nerve/root chamber is filled with a calcium oxide-based material that mimics natural tooth calcification, releasing calcium into the dentin tubules, just as what normally happens throughout the life of a healthy tooth. In this way, the tooth "simulates" a healthy, intact tooth so that the tissue and immune membrane around it remains viable.
Finally, an inlay or onlay is perfectly fitted to the missing tooth tissue, then laser-bonded to the tooth so that it is restored to its original strength and appearance.
Everything about these root canal therapies is geared to preserve the mouth's and the body's immune systems, and to reduce or eliminate the side-effects and/or failures associated with the standard materials and techniques which are commonly used.

Alternatives to Conventional Mixed-Metal Crowns--The Restorolase and Biocompatible Crowns In a situation where large amounts of tooth structure may be missing due to cracked, missing parts of teeth or extensive root canal therapies where a lot of tooth structure was damaged and/or removed, a crown may not be necessary. After these teeth have been properly treated, the Restoralase technique uses a 3-D imaging machine to make highly accurate, three-dimensional computer models of them and their missing areas, and then fabricates inlays or onlays from biocompatible materials that will fit perfectly into those missing areas. The inlays or onlays are then fused to the tooth using a laser, and actually become a functioning, protective and aesthetically pleasing part of the tooth. If a crown is necessary, crowns made from biocompatible materials can be fabricated, posts made of benign materials such as nylon can be placed in the filling compound using a laser, and then the crown itself can be seated and bonded using a laser so that there is no cement leakage or failure to worry about.

A New, More Comfortable and Thorough Approach to Hygiene (Teeth Cleaning) Treatments For people who have had to endure the pain and discomfort of getting their teeth cleaned with sharp, cutting probes, the Sterilase laser teeth cleaning procedure should come as a welcome relief. Beside the fact that standard cleanings can be an ordeal that not many look forward to, cutting and scraping around the gums and periodontal (immune) membranes can expose the entire body to every pathogen and toxin in the mouth. The Sterilase teeth cleaning uses a laser to clean and disinfect around every tooth, and eliminates the initial cutting/scraping treatment. Then, an ultrasonic scaler, which uses ultra-high frequency sound waves accompanied with a cleansing water spray is used to remove the remaining scale and plaque around the teeth. Finally, a spray of water containing sea-salt is used to rinse off the teeth and gums. When teeth are cleaned in this manner, the mouth's natural immune system is protected, and all manner of pathogens and harmful agents can be removed from around the teeth and gums in a virtually painless and much more comfortable way.

Dealing With Chronic Periodontal Inflammation Since chronic inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissues may be caused by a number of factors, it is important to have a full-mouth exam and an evaluation that determines what materials are already in the mouth from previous dental treatments. This includes types of dental fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, etc. Once this evaluation is completed, a course of re-treatments of the affected areas should be planned, and then performed as soon as is reasonably possible. Once the sources of inflammation are removed, treatments that expedite healing and regrowth of tissue can be started.

Reducing Stress During Treatments The stress of undergoing dental treatments can be very debilitating to many patients. They may automatically tense up in the dental chair, which can restrict oxygen flow and lymphatic circulation, both of which are vital for the healing process. Stress also lowers immunity, and when a patient is apprehensive prior to, and during, the actual treatment, he or she can be more vulnerable to pathogens. There are several ways to alleviate the stress of treatment, without resorting to drugs or "twilight sleep." At the Comprehensive Dental Center in Fullerton, vibrating, heated chair mats are used to help relax the patient and keep the lymphatics moving. Movies and music provided with virtual reality glasses and stereo headphones take patients to a different place and help to keep them more relaxed. And many of the procedures themselves are less intimidating and more patient-friendly--"kinder and gentler"--and that really helps to get the patient in a calmer frame of mind.

Spread the Word It is evident that dentistry can help to protect and improve the overall health of a patient, by simply keeping the preservation of the immune system in mind during treatments. More dentists as well as patients need to be educated and aware as to what can be done to improve the state of dentistry today. One way to do that is to spread the word--share what you have learned. Ask questions and be curious. Do your own research on the subject. And feel free to contact us with any questions.
